Coaching or Therapy?

Is there a Difference between High Performance Coaching and Therapy?

It is commonly recognized that there are similarities between psychotherapy and personal coaching, especially regarding therapists who are “coach-like “ in their practice.  While professional psychotherapists and coaches often acknowledge the parallels between the two fields, they also draw sharp distinctions.

High Performance Coaching

  • High Performance Coaches work with the clients themselves to find solutions and strategize to overcome the limitations that confront them. This is especially valuable when an individual doesn’t know where to start or how to facilitate significant change and meaningful advancement in their life.
  • High Performance Coaches help normal functioning clients identify areas of discontent, then work in partnership with them to achieve their specific goals and live a fully charged life.

Psychotherapy

  • Psychotherapy can help individuals with serious, mental or emotional problems, such as substance abuse, major depression and personality disorders.  The coaching process is not appropriate for psychological exploration.
  • Psychotherapists typically diagnose mental illness and assist in the reduction of problematic symptomology to restore clients to normal healthy functioning.
